Japanese scientists have created this transparent see-thru frog. Errrr why?

The researchers also say that by fusing the genes of fluorescent proteins to the frog’s genes, they can create frogs that glow. Glowing frogs can help scientists study specific “problem” genes by providing a real-time visual indication (i.e. the frogs glow) when those genes become active.

Professor Sumida says, “Transparent frogs will prove useful as laboratory animals because they make it easier and cheaper to observe the development and progress of cancer, the growth and aging of internal organs, and the effects of chemicals on organs.”

We all have heard of the story of the rabbit and the tortoise, but this is a different story all together.

NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old tortoise in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said.

The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean , then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

"It is incredible. A-less-than- a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park , told AFP.

"After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately , it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist added.

"The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it followed its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added.

"The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four years," he explained.

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

This is a real story that shows that our differences don't matter much when we need the comfort of another. We could all learn a lesson from these two creatures of God, "Look beyond the differences and find a way to walk the path together."

Alex, the little bird brain, is able to identify different objects, colors, shapes, and quantities of up to six. Alex also understood the concept of bigger and smaller, same or different. How's that for a bird brain?

Alex also had the emotional level of a 2-year-old child, Pepperberg says. After repeating some learning trials dozens of times, Alex would become tired and throw objects off the trays with his beak. When visiting the veterinarian, Alex would go back in his cage and slam the door. Yes smart people are like that too.

Scientists take control of a pigeon's brain thus have manage to create a remote control pigeon. Based on this Times Online report, Chinese scientists have succeeded in implanting electrodes in the brain of a pigeon. With this brain implant, the scientists could control the bird's flight remotely.

The scientists at the Robot Engineering Technology Research Center at Shandong University of Science and Technology in eastern China used micro-electrodes to command the bird to fly right or left and up or down.

While a bird's brain might be easy to take control of, there is not mention if this studies will lead to human brain control.

On the other hand Sony did have a patent of a device that creates "sensory experiences" somewhat of a mind control device that doesn't require implants.

100per has some very creative products. Two of my favorite from the designer, Hironao Tsuboi.

First of is the ultra cool standing umbrella. What a neat idea. Don't need to put the umbrella in a container for lean it against a wall or something. Just let it stand.

Another cool creation is the light bulb looks like a light bulb Hironao Tsuboi decided to change the focus of the light bulb from the light it produce to the bulb itself. The light bulb is designed in a way that it looks as if it is not inserted correctly.

Cool stuff.

The kit is being advertise with words like, "Unleash the sex kitten inside... simply extend the Peekaboo pole inside the tube, slip on the sexy tunes and away your go!"

"Soon you'll be flaunting it to the world ans earning a fortune in Peekaboo Dance Dollars!"
